NAVAL SERVICE
INQUIRY INTO CONDITIONS. MANY WITNESSES HEARD. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, July 24. The commission recently set up by the Government to report on pay and allowances in the New Zealand Division cf the Royal Navy met in Auckland today and considered the evidence already submitted. It is under the chairmanship of Mr R. E. Price, conciliation commissioner, other members being Mr C. M. Bruce, recently retired assistant secretary of the Admiralty, who arrived in the Dominion an July 10 to lake part in the commission. Paymaster-Comman-der G. L. O. Davis, R.N., squadron j accountant officer on H.M.S. Leander, and Mr T. F. Anderson, secretary of the Seamen's Union. So far the commission has heard more than 50 witnesses of all ranks, including Imperial as well as New Zealand naval ratings from the Achilles, Philomel and Wakakura. It has also heard shore instructors of the R.N.V.R. It will continue its deliberations on the evidence submitted next week in Wellington, and it will return to Auckland in time to hear further evidence from members of the crew when the Leander returns to Auckland on August 11.
