OBITUARY
MR FRANK HERBERT. i . PIONEER PONGAROA RESIDENT. - (“Times-Age” Special.) The death occurred suddenly at - Master ton yesterday of Mr Frank Herbert, of Pongaroa. The late Mr Herbert was born in Stroud, -Gloucestershire, England, on March 16, 1870, coming 14 years later to New Zealand in the sailing ship Helen Denny with his parents, the late Mr and Mrs Henry Herbert, of Takapau, Hawke’s Bay, where he resided for many years, afterwards moving to Herbertville, where he married a daughter of Mr and Mrs James Wylie. In 1897 he took up farming in partnership with his brother, the late Mr Arthur Herbert, in the Pongaroa district, where the brothers founded one of the first Romney stud flocks in the Akitio County Later Mr Frank Herbert commenced on his own account at Hazelwood. Pongaroa. where he had resided until his death. The late Mr Frank Herbert took a keen interest in the district, being chairman of the Hospital Board for many years, a member of the Rabbit Board, and in his earlier days a member of the local Rifle Club. He was convenor of the first dog trial meetings to be held in Pongaroa. His wife predeceased him eleven years ago. He leaves a grown-up family comprising five sons—Messrs Stanley, Tom, Harold and Jesse Herbert, of Pongaroa, and George Herbert of Onewhero/Auckland, and three daughters, Mrs VZm. McAvoy, Feilding, Mrs E. Knowles. Pongaroa, and Mrs F. Walker cf South Westland. The eldest daughter, Frances, died 22 years ago. There are 24 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mrs V. H. Heath, of Masterton, is a niece.
The funeral will take place tomorrow, leaving the late residence, Pongaroa, at 1.30 p.m. for the Pongaroa Cemetery.
