Crawford (Australia) heat C. G. Mako and F. A. Parker (U.S.A.) by default. Mako announced shortly after the singles that he would be unable to play in the doubles “because of my lame , back." He added: "I awoke this morning with a cold in my back. I felt sore’ during the singles, and I don’t discredit Quist. He played marvellous tennis — too good for me. He just couldn’t miss. “Today after the singles my back was stiff and the club masseur advised me that I would need two days of sunlamp treatment before I would be able to play again.” Instead of playing in the doubles final, Quist and Crawford played an exhibition tennis match against F. A. Parker and Dave Freeman. The Australians won. 7/5, 672. The Americans led 4/0 before the Australians decided to bear down on them. In the mixed doubles semi-final. William Murphy (Chicago) and Miss Mary Arnold (Los Angeles) beat Crawford and Mrs Virginia Rice-Johnson (Boston), 7/5, 3/6, 8/6. DAVIS CUP CUBA DEFEATS CANADA. HAVANA, July 23. Cuba beat Canada by four matches to one in the Davis Cup tie. and will meet Australia in the American zone final. In the final singles today, Jose Aguero (Cuba) beat Bruce Hall (Ca nada), 6/4. 6/0, 6/4.
