Mr A. Maxted. of College Street, Masterton, is a patient in the Masterton Hospital. Mr J. W. Sturton has been elected unopposed to fill the vacancy on the the Pahiatua Borough Council, caused by the death of Mr J. E. Murphy. At the annual meeting of the Gladstone Herd Testing Association Mr A. C. Gawith asked Mr L. R. Wilton to accept, on behalf of those present, a tobacco pouch as a small token in appreciation of his services as chairman over a long- period of years.

Messrs B. Hollier (Hastings), R. McArthur (Christchurch), H. Dick, W. H. de Luen, A. J. Stitt, W. G. Rusbridge. J. T. Kirk-Burnnand (Wellington), R. T. Dale (Huntley), C. Morgan (Napier), L. A. Davies (Wanganui), R. Duncan (Christchurch), are among the guests at the Hotel Midland. The condition of Mr Edgar Henderson, who was injured in a motor collision on' the Waingawa Bridge on Sunday afternoon, was reported by the hospital authorities this morning as being satisfactory. Mr Henderson passed a good night. Mr Ken Welch, Junr., was discharged from hospital yesterday. ' A leading figure in the American motion picture industry for more than a quarter of a century, Mr Adolph Zukor, founder and head of Paramount Pictures, Incorporated, arrived at Auckland by the Niagara from Vancouver in the course of a short visit to Australia and New Zealand. Mr Zukor was the guest of honour at a dinner given by representatives of the film industry in New Zealand.

Colonel A. B. Williams, D. 5.0., of the Royal New Zealand Artillery, who has been on loan to the Australian Military Forces doing duty in Sydney, went to Darwin on the Montoro in charge of 99 Royal Australian Air Force personnel. He will later proceed by air to Singapore, where he will be stationed for a brief period. He will return to Australia by air, thence crossing to rejoin his unit in New Zealand.

Senior inspector of permanent way in the Auckland railway district, Mr Arthur Hopkinson died suddenly last week. Born in Bury. Lancashire, 63 years ago, Mr Hopkinson came to New Zealand at the age of 17. He joined the Railways Department in 1907." In 1932 he was promoted to the position of inspector of permanent way in To Aroha, and two years later he was transferred on promotion to Ohakune. In 1937 he went to Auckland, subsequently attaining the rank of senior inspector of permanent way in the Auckland district. The death occurred in Dunedin recently of Mr Thomas Carlisle Thomson, who was well known some years ago in the freezing industry throughout New Zealand and Australia. Mr Thomson was born in Alexandria. Scotland, in 1865, and as a lad of about nine years came out to New Zealand. He entered the freezing industry in Palmerston North, and was then manager of Waiau. Spring Creek and other works in Marlborough. In 1899 he was appointed manager of the large Wallacctown Junction works. In 1913 Mr Thomson resigned his position in Southland and for a few years filled managerial positions in New South Wales and Victoria, having charge at different times of the Riverina. Deniliquin and Muton works. On his return to New Zealand he lived for a time in the North Island, and finally in Christchurch.
