BADMINTON

B GRADE MATCH MANAWATU DEFEAT WAIRARAPA KEENLY CONTESTED GAME. Playing bright, sparkling badminton, Manawatu defeated Wairarapa 15 matches to 9 in a B representative fixture played at Palmerston North on Saturday night. The games were keenly contested and in many cases the scores were no indication of the run of play. On arrival in Palmerston North on Saturday- afternoon, the visitors were hospitably entertained by Mr and Mrs McDonald. Mr McDonald, who is secretary of the Manawatu Association, is a keen follower of the game, and had all arrangements running smoothly. An adjournment was made later to the Masonic Hotel, where all the players were the guests of the Manawatu Badminton Association.

Wairarapa, although defeated, were not disgraced, as all members of the learn acquitted themselves splendidly in the face of strong opposition. A tasty supper was later provided, at which Mr G. McCullough (captain of the Wairarapa team) expressed on behalf of the team appreciation for the warm hospitality extended by the Manawatu players. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr and Mrs McDonald for their services.

The men’s doubles produced some exciting play. For Wairarapa B. M. Hurley was in excellent form. G. McCullough did not play up to his usual standard. E. Madsen and H. Brown both played splendid games for Wairarapa. Hill, Rotheray and Laing were the outstanding Manawatu players, while Mesdames Mackay, New and Misses Hansard and Allpress also did well.
