CARTERTON

GOLF COMPETITIONS HILL AND HUGHES CUP. (“Times-Age” Special.) A competition for the Hill and Hughes Cup was played on Saturday when a two round stableford match resulted as under: —F. Hill, 21-15-22- , 15—73 (winner), B. Booth, 33-3-32-3 — 71; G. S. George, 26-4-31-4-65; H. Dudson, 26-3-31-3-63. In a match for Hill and Hughes buttons. D. Smith and Krahagen (holders) were defeated by Fisher and Riggs, 3 and 2. FOOTBALL DANCE BRILLIANT SUCCESS. The dance held in the King’s Theatre on Saturday night by the Carterton Football Club was well attended and was a brilliant success. Dancing was indulged in until midnight to the strains of music provided by Tom Udy's dance orchestra. The M.’sC. were Messrs Jim Steffert. George Brown and J. Fitzgerald. A sumptuous supper was provided and was presided over by a capable ladies committee. During the evening Mr H. A. McPhee. chairman of the Wairarapa Rugby Union, presented a cup provided for competition between Wairarapa and Hawke’s Bay junior representatives. The cup was won by Wairarapa and in making the presentation the chairman congratulated the representative team and its selector upon their success. He expressed the hope that the cup would long remain in Wairarapa’s possession. He asked Mr J. Steffert as captain of the team to accept the cup. Mr Steffert and Mr Gordon Udy (selector) thanked Mr McPhee for his kindly words, and both said that Wairarapa would do their utmost in years to come to retain the trophy. The Poverty Bay footballers were guests of honour at the dance, and enjoyed themselves greatly. Rivers in Flood. Owing to heavy warm rain in the hill the Waiohine and Maungaterere rivers were in flood yesterday. Personals. Mr A. Knutson. Rexwood Street, has found it necessary to enter Bowen Street, Hospital in Wellington. Miss Norris, of Wellington, is relieving Nurse Goodall (Plunket Nurse) who is at present a patient in Croydon Hospital.
