POINT-TO-POINT
PAPER CHASE CLUB MEETING
WAIRARAPA STEEPLECHASE.
WON BY S. TAYLOR'S BARNEY.
(“Times-Age” Special.)
In most delightful surroundings at "Heatherlea.” Upper Plain, the property of Mr G. H. Perry, the Wairarapa Paper Chase Club held its annual Point-to-Point sports meeting on Saturday. A more ideal situation for cross-country racing could hardly be imagined for the river flat on which most of the events took place was bordered by a high terrace from which the large and enthusiastic crowd of spectators gained a perfect view of the racing. The normal thrills of point-to-point steeplechasing were accentuated for the public by this grandstand view, probably unique in New Zealand. Open Point-to-Point: Miss M. Morrison’s General, 1; Mr V. Tripe’s Mirtello, 2; Miss M. Morrison’s Silver, 3. Then General went to the front, Silver moving up until at the bottom turn General led from Rangi, Silver and Mirtello. General increased the lead into the straight where Rangi faded away and Mirtello overtook Silver which threw its jockey at the last fence. General won by eight lengths.
