Cole Street Culvert.

The replacement of the old wooden culvert carrying a stream under Cole Street near the junction of Coradine Street will probably be put in hand in about two months’ time. It is hoped to be able to utilise the existing concrete sides of the culvert, and to replace the wooden top with concrete. •

i-M to VJ Numberplates On Too Soon

Because he put'his new numberplates on his vehicle too soon, the driver of a motor-van appeared in the Auckland Police Court before Mr J. Moring, S.M. New plates were found on the van on May 14. Defendant said he had lost one of his 1938-39 plates, so he thought it would be better to put the 1939-40 plates on rather than drive about with only one plate on the vehicle. Defendant was fined 10s. and costs, 10s.

No Contribution to History

"As far as I can see this council is only a debt-collecting agency for these fellows, and I cannot see why we should go to the extent of paying for a compilation of such a history in Christchurch,” said Councillor P. H. Lynch, at the special meeting of the Temuka Borough Council, when a letter from the Christchurch City Treasurer was read about the compilation of the official centennial history of Canterbury. The cost was estimated at £l2OO, and under an allocation based on the mean percentage between population and capital value, the Temuka council's proportion was £6 16s Id. It was decided that the council's previous decision not to contribute be adhered to.
