OLD LOVE LETTER
MONTESQUIEU MANUSCRIPTS
A love letter written 200 years ago to Montesquieu by his wife, at present on show at flic Montesquieu exhibition hold in Bordeaux, is one of the most examined documents. “I wish to believe, my dear friend,” wrote the affectionate wife of 48 to her husband of 53, "that, despite appearances. my letter brings you pleasure. That is why I do not. wish Vigneau (a courier) to depart without this letter. assuring you that I love you as 1 love my life. You have made an ineffaceable impression upon me, and I feel I could never change. How happy would I be if I could flatter myself that you are the same as regards myself.” Unfortunately, the husband’s reply has been lost.
The Montesquieu manuscripts now being shown at Bordeaux are part of the total recently sold in Paris for 401,000 francs. Among them was the famous “Esprit des Lois.”
