Mr J. L. Robson, formerly a student of Victoria College, Wellington, and at present on leave from the Public Trust Office, has been awarded a Doctorate of Philosophy by the University of London.
Mr J. Hemi, of Auckland, who has been selected as a full-back for the English tour of the New Zealand League team, is on a visit to Masterton prior to his departure for England. He will be entertained at a dance at Te Whiti tonight.
The Presbytery of Wellington at a special meeting yesterday sustained a call to the Rev. J. R. Blanchard, 8.A., Minister of St. John’s Presbyterian Church, Wellington, from Scots Church, Adelaide, South Australia. Ihe call was placed in the hands of Mr Blanchard, who accepted it. He will leave Wellington for Adelaide at the end of August.
Another link with the early history of South Taranaki was severed with the death on Wednesday of Mr Arthur ("Attie”) Newell, of Fraser Road, near Hawera. Mr Newell was one month short of his 82nd birthday, and 66 years of his life had been spent in the' Hawera district. Mrs Newell died in 1923 but he is survived by three sons and three daughters. The New Zealand Badminton team left by the Awatea last night to undertake a tour of the Australian States, and was given a heartening send-off by a number of players and followers of the game. The team comprised the Rev. H. W. Austin (Wanganui?, manager, P. Hawksworth (Masterton), captain, J. Spedding (New Plymouth), E. A. Roussell (Wellington), G. A. Pearce (Wellington), Mrs Hawksworth (Masterton), Mrs Wren (Auckland), Miss N. Fleming (Wellington),and Miss M. Kerr (Dunedin).
