The French railways consume annually 11,000,000 tons of coal, 225,000 ons of steel and iron, and 240,000 ions of rails. Further, they consume 450,000 cubic metres of lumber each year, 6,000,000 tons of ballast, and 2,400,000 square metres of cloth and textiles. French railways have 50,000 miles of track, 19,600 locomotives, 900 railcars, 34,000 passengers cars, 511,000 freight cars, and 13,000 stations.
