THE PORT BOWEN
& FURTHER EFFORTS FAIL. WORK TO BE CONTINUED. TODAY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.! WANGANUI. This Day. At 10 o’clock last night the three tugs Toia, Terawhiti and Kahanui began a combined effort to pull the Port Bowen off the beach. However, at 2 o'clock this morning little hope of freeing the vessel was held though the efforts wore continuing. The tide was then falling fast and the efforts of the three tugs, which were operating at full power, were unable to make further progress. For fear of losing what headway they had made in their combined pull the strain was being continued. A further effort will be made at the next high tide at 1.14 p.m. today. The lugs will begin pulling at 11 a.m. The tides are now growing weaker. Mr N. G. Armstrong, chairman of the Harbour Board, states that there is no foundation for a suggestion that the northern beacon light was not burning on the night on which the Port Bowen grounded. The pilot staff declare that all lights were functioning as usual.
