GOOD FERTILISERS
NEEDED AT THIS SEASON. As you doubtless are aware, bone meal, basic slag, kainit and suchlike artificial fertilisers cannot always be used. They are too slow-acting. What is needed at this season is fertilisers which will take immediate effect. The chief of these are: Superphospate of lime. —This is invaluable to newly set out seedlings and young plants, helping them to root quickly. It also benefits flowering shrubs when they reach the bud stage. Sulphate of ammonia.—This is aboveall things a leaf former. It should be given, therefore, to any plants which have poor or inadequate foliage. Sulphate of potash. —A fertiliser much to the lilting of most flowers, gently stimulating to the plants generally and beneficial to the quality of the flowers.
Dahlias value an application a week before they are planted out; sweet peas will appreciate a dose now, gladioli a dose at fortnight intervals after the spike can be felt in the sheath. A complete fertiliser. —To prepare a good, all-round fertiliser mix the three artificials mentioned at the rate of superphosphate 4 parts, sulphate of ammonia 1 part, sulphate of potash 1 part.
Whether used singly or mixed the rate of application is loz to the squareyard.
