ROCK PLANTS

MEASURES FOR PROTECTION. Many of the choicer rock plants, especially those with woolly foliage, like the Androsace, are liable to perish in our wet winters. This is not due to any lack of hardiness, for in their native homes they have to withstand much more frost and snow than we get in this country. It is our winter wet that kills them and steps should be taken to protect them from its damaging effects. First, all dead leaves and weeds should be cleared away and the rock garden cleaned up. Loosen the surface soil around the plants with a pointed stick, then surround the plants with a thick layer of granite chips or limestone. The former should be used for those plants which dislike lime. Work these chips among the growths and pack closely round the crowns. As an additional precaution choice plants may be covered with a pane of glass.
