HARRIER ACTIVITIES

MASTERTON CLUB. ■ (Notes by “Telle Along.”) Last week's race against Hastings over the measured Gj mile course definitely established W. Pullar's claim to the Wellington Provincial Championship and also the New Zealand title. He ran a well-timed race giving an excellent display of cross country running, his time, 34min. 43secs., being a record for the course. This record previously was held by C. Weller of Palmerston North, who is the present holder of the New Zealand cross country title. G. Gregory ran a hard race and recorded excellent time, but he seemed to be making very hard work of his running and would be well advised to take things easy until the championship. If Gregory can be kept going and time his running at Silverstrcam he will surely earn a place in the Wellington team to run at Hastings on August 15. R. Shaw ran his best race to date on Saturday and is well on the way to his old form. If he can only repeat his performance of last season, Masterton will go very close to winning the A grade teams' race.

Much will depend on the running oi the other three members of the team. M. Sellar has shown form over five miles in gaining third fastest tijne, but it is doubtful if he can hold this pace for the extra mile and a quarter. With careful running he should finish far enough up to make him Masterton’s fourth man and the deciding factor in the teams' race.

R. Wyeth is a novice at cross country running, but up to date has registered some good times over 6j miles. He may lack the experience to gain him a place in the team but can be relied on to run a good solid race. The position for sixth man in the team gives the selector the choice between H. Carle and G. Wickens. The latter ran a good race against Hastings. He is very fit at present and may be the choice for this place. H. Carle is not at top form yet and on Saturday made a mistake in letting his opponent take the lead while he was content to run back with two oi his own team mates. Carle has always run well at provincial meetings and this with his experience of the Silverstream course may ensure his position in the team.

The club will field a junior .team which will be selected on Saturday next.
