WRESTLING
BOESCH VERSUS CLARKE
The first wrestling match of the 1939 season to be staged in Masterton this season will be staged on Tuesday night and the enthusiastic reports which have been received of exciting matches and record crowds in other parts of the Dominion have caused local followers of the sport to look forward eagerly to the event The contestants will be two of the fastest and most spectacular wrestlers in the country, Paul "Bombshell" Boesch and Jim "Dazzler” Clarke, and if any pair of men could turn on a display of the most brilliant order it is these two. Clarke and Boesch both weigh well over 16 stone, but it is their dazzling speed and daring which has brought them most of their success and made them the strong popular favourites they are today. Boesch’s favourite attacking measure is the dropkick which he has developed to a stage of perfection that no other wrestler has been able to approach, while his rolling short-arm scissors is another hold which others use but in the execution of which he is the acknowledged master. Boesch has plenty of other holds and manoeuvres to draw upon, including an effective fall-winner in his "Japanese sleeper,” but he will probably find that the whole of his bag of tricks will be needed against Clarke, who can take punishment and does quite a lot of damage himself in the course of a bout He has a particularly punishing head lock and he also does considerable damage with jolts, dumps, and tackles. Box plans are now open at Orange’s. Queen Street, and Colson’s, Carterton, and early booking is advised.
