REGENT THEATRE

“FOOLS FOR SCANDAL.” Hailed as one of the greatest comedies of the year, “Fools for Scandal,” starring Carole Lombard and Fernand Gravet, will open tonight at the Regent Theatre. A light and gay romance of London and Paris, it is said to reach a new standard in entertainment. No one needs to be told about Miss Lombard. Her recent comedy triumphs, “True Confession” and “Nothing Sacred,” speak for themselves. “Fools for Scandal” gives her the opportunity to further her success as a comedienne. Gravet is the handsome, appealing young Franco-Belgian actor who was discovered in Paris and took to Hollywood under personal contract to stai’ with Joan Blondell in the delightful comedy-romance, “Romance in Paris.” In his current picture he displays a talent that was not shown in the 1937 films —he sings and dances. The famed song-writing team of Rodgers and Hart did the tunes —“How Can You Forget?” and “There’s a Boy in Harlem.” There is a lavish dance sequence set in an elaborate Paris night club, to add to the general gaiety of the film. The story is about an American movie star who, under an assumed name, is seeing the sights of London and Paris. That, of course, is Carole Lombard. She meets with a baron who likewise is travelling incognito and keeping secret his rank. And that is Fernand Gravet. Plenty of fun follows when Carole Lombard hires him as her chef. Others in the capable cast include Isabel Jeans, Ralph Bellamy, Marie Wilson, Allen Jenkins, Marcia Ralston, Heather Thatcher and Tola Nesmith. Lavish settings and beautiful costumes are another feature of “Fools for Scandal,” and Miss Lombard’s gowns are something for the girls to go home and yearn for. The costume ball sequence has some of the most original creations ever seen on the screen. COMING ON SATURDAY. Deanna Durbin in “Three Smart Girls Grow Up” is announced as the attraction on Saturday.
