PROTEST BY SAWMILLERS AGAINST UNBALANCED UTILISATION. TELEGRAM TO MINISTER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) GREYMOUTH, This Day. A representative meeting of West Coast sawmillers and North Canterbury timber merchants, held at Greymouth, decided to despatch the following telegram to Mr H. T. Armstrong, ; Minister for Housing and Acting-Com-missioner for State Forests: “A joint conference of sawmillers and timber merchants held today expressed keen disappointment at the result of representations’ contained in a telegram of June 28. The recent decision of the Government to use only kiln-dried Dressing A rimu, in lieu of heart, has failed to solve the problem of unbalanced utilisation of existing stocks and future production. The conference views the position with I alarm and urges, as the only solution,, that Housing Department and State) Advances specifications be amended to permit the use of seasoned air-dried Dressing A, reduced to approved moisture content, consistent with local conditions, as well as kiln-dried for flooring and weatherboards on the I East Coast of the South Island. It is imperative that an immediate decision be made —otherwise mills must close down one day in each week to adjust stocks to the restricted consumption of Dressing A.”
