HOUSEWIFE’S NOTEBOOK
SOME USEFUL HINTS. Photographs may be cleaned with a pad of cottonwool moistened with methylated spirit. This does not apply to highly artistic studies touched up with pencil strokes. To remove fruit-stains from linen, dip the linen in sour buttermilk and dry in a hot sun. Then wash it in cold water. To clean gilt picture frames, wash with vinegar. If a little turpentine is added to the water in which clothes are boiled, it will whiten them.
Put a pinch of salt into water in which cut flowers are placed and they will last longer. Lemon juice will remove mildew stains.
Soak hair-brushes in ammoniated water to harden the bristles and prevent them from falling out. A fresh egg will sink in salt water, and the degrees of freshness may be judged by changes in its position, until eventually. when stale it will rise high above the surface. If a night-light is required for a sickroom, sprinkle salt around the wick of a candle-end, and when the wick is lighted it will burn dimly and steadily for many hours. * Never put potatoes on the table in a covered dish. They will absorb their own moisture and become soggy.
