NEW CRUISERS

THREE TO BE LAUNCHED IN BRITAIN.

RUGBY, July 17.

Three new cruisers are to be launched this week. They are H.M.S. Nigeria, of 8000 tons, and carrying 12 6-inch guns, and eighth 4-inch antiaircraft gunds. H.M.S. Dido, of 5450 tons, with ten 5.25-inch guns; and H.M.S. Mauritius, a sister ship to the Nigeria.

It is understood H.M.S. Ramillies. at present with the First Battle Squadron of the Mediterranean Fleet, is to be temporarily attached to the Home Fleet for the exercises in August. The Ramillies will arrive in Spithead on Thursday.

Two of the ships mentioned belong to a class of cruisers of a new type known as the Fiji class of which nine are being built. The names allotted to these ships are Fiji. Kenya, Mauritius, Nigeria. Trinidad. Ceylon, Gambia, Jamaica and Uganda. The class is intermediate between the Southampton type of 9000 tons and the Dido type of 5450 the “Fijis” having a displacement of about 8000 tons. They are to be armed with 6-inch guns and will also carry several 4-inch anti other anti-aircraft guns.
