INTOXICATED MOTORISTS

GAOL SENTENCE AND FINE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. July 17. Thirty days’ gaol in one case and a £5O fine in the second, were sentences imposed on two intoxicated motorists when they were charged before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., in the Magistrates' 1 Court this morning. The two accused were Walter Andrew McMillan, a farm manager, of Irwell, Leeston, aged 53, who was fined £5O, and whose licence was cancelled for two- years, and Thomas Raymond Warren, aged 28, carpenter, who was sentenced to 30 days’ hard labour, and has his licence cancelled for four years. Before dealing with the prosecutions, Sub-Inspector Packer pointed out that up to July 17 last year 21 charges of driving while intoxicated had been laid while so far this year there had been 28, including the two today. So far this month five persons had been charged. There were three charges in January, three in April, and five in June.

McMillan’s motor-car went over a three-foot bank on the corner of the Christchurch-Springston highway early on Sunday morning, said the subinspector. Inquiries revealed that McMillan had had a slight collision with another car.

In dealing with Warren’s case the sub-inspector said that accused ran into a cyclist from behind. It was then found that he was intoxicated. The magistrate pointed out that Warren had been convicted for a similar offence in February, 1938.
