BOWLING YEAR

MASTERTON CLUB ANNUAL REPORT SPIRIT OF GOOD-FELLOWSHIP.

ENJOYABLE SOCIAL EVENINGS.

"In submitting the forty-first annual report on the activities of the club, your committee feels that the 1938 1939 season has been noteworthy for the great good fellowship and sociability that marked the association of members, both on and off the greens.” states Mr S. V. Gooding, president of the Masterton Bowling Club,, in the annual report. “This good-fellowship and sociability is a promi »;nt feature of most bowling clubs, but your committee feels that it was outstandingly reflected in the club’s operations during the past season and expressess the hope that it will be fostered by future committees. Most enjoyable visits were interchanged with the Eketahuna and Pahiatua clubs, and the visit of the Upper Hutt Club to our greens was a very happy function. The billiard and snooker tournaments with members of the Soldiers’ Club proved so popular that there is little chance of these bright evenings being discontinued. Your committee is grateful to the Soldiers’ Club for providing the facilities for these tournaments,.and was pleased to throw open its greens to members of that club on two occasions, when highly enjoyable games of bowls were keenly contested. In addition to these social activities, your committee has organised two successful bridge evenings and proposes that further bridge evenings should be held. The next bridge evening will be held in the Y.M.C.A. rooms commencing .at 7.45 p.m., on July 31, when a full attendance of members will be appreciated. Your committee proposes to wind up its off-season activities with a social and dance if the support of members is assured.

"The club competitions, which were productive of some very interesting games and good exhibitions of bowling resulted as follow: —Champion Singles, Mr Taylor, whb went on to win the Centre’s Champion of Champions. Singles; Champion Pairs, Messrs A. Stubbings and J. Finlayson (s); Cham - pion Fours, Messrs J. Skeet, D. Thomson, W. Hendry, and W. Christian (s), who with Mr D. Douglass substituting for Mr D. Thomson, also won the Centre’s Champion of Champions Fours; Club Fours, Messrs F. Mills, 11. H. Daniell. J. F. Roberts and W. Hendry; Colts Singles, Mr J. V. Gordon; Handicap Singles, Mr J. A. Russell. Messrs P. Trevorrow, A. W. Chapman, A. Stubbings and E. Reid (s) were successful in winning the Centre’s New Year tournament which was held on the Club’s greens. “The Labour Day tournament was won by Messrs J. Hunter, A. Weller, A. O. Jones and E. Reid (s), and the Easter tournament by Messrs Frost, Fenton, J. Campbell and W. Christian (s), the lead and No 2 being members of the Park Club.

“Enjoyable games were played with members of the Park Club for the Mutrie Cup, Bell Shield and Wall Cup, the Shield at the end of the season being held by the Park Club, to whom your committee extends its congratulations, and the Mutrie and Wall Cups by Messrs D. Thomson and E. Reid (s) and Messrs N. McKay, E. Holtham, R. Gleeson and- J. V. Gordon (s) of our own Club, respectively. The competition for the Wall Cup taught the young bowlers of both Clubs many of the finer points and rules of the game and your committee hopes that this trophy will be the subject of active competition next year. Your committee congratulates all members of the club who were successful in the Centre, club and inter-club competitions and tournaments, and also the young bowlers from the Park Club for their fine performances in the Wall Cup games. “The club has been particularly fortunate in the generosity of its members, and your committee expresses its gratitude to Messrs F. H. Dunderdale, J. Campbell, D. H. Speedy, J. A. Russell, H. Thomas and A. J. Welch for donations. Your committee also thanks the Press and its publicity officer, Mr C. Perry, for publicity given to club activities, the ladies’ committee for splendid services in catering, the green superintendent, Mr G. Beecroft, for the vast amount, of work devoted to the greens by him; Messrs F. Knowles. D. Thomson and W. Lewis for assistance with top-dressing, the greenkeeper for his untiring services and Mr W. Darvill for donation of billiard cues. Your committee also thanks the selector, the match committee, the afternoon tea and billiard stewards (Messrs F. H. Dunderdale and E. W. Nielsen) and all others who assisted the committee during the season. The club lost by death a genial bowler in the person of our late treasurer, Mr Jas Watson, and your committee extends its sympathy to his relatives. “Your committee expresses the opinion that a minimum membership of one hundred is necessary for the maintenance of two greens, and exhorts all members to be active in the matter of procuring new members who will be assured of a hearty welcome and ex cellent coaching from the club’s official coach, Mr G. Hayne. Pending a fairly substantial increase in member ship, your committee recommends an increase of five shillings in the annual subscription of senior members. The greens are in excellent condition for the ensuing season, and the club can view the future with pleasant expectations. While referring to the greens, your committee recommends to the incoming committee that scrim be used on the ends in future.”
