GOLF COMPETITIONS HILL AND HUGHES TROPHIES. ("Times-Age” Special.) The weather was fine for the Carterton Golf Club’s competition held on the Taratahi links on Saturday. In a match for the Hill and Hughes Buttons A. H. Krahagen and D. Smith defeated the holders, H. Dudson and R. ‘ Lawrence. OBITUARY MR HENRY A. BICK. The news was received in Carterton yesterday morning of the death of MiHenry Arthur Bick, of Pahiatua The late Mr Bick was taken seriously ill at the latter end of June, and entered - the Pahiatua Hospital. Last Friday it was decided to transfer him from the Pahiatua Hospital to Wellington Hospital whither he was taken by ambi lance, but he died at 11.45 o clock on Saturday evening. The late Mr Bic was for many years a well-known figure in Carterton, having come m New Zealand in April, 1909, and foi some considerable lime resided with his uncle, Mr John Fensham, of Riclv mond Road. Carterton. Some 29 or 30 years ago he was employed by the late Mr Wm Moriarty, who had built t premises now occupied by the Carterton Furnishing Coy, and which was then conducted as a drapery and grocery establishment. During his cmplovment with Mr Moriarty he had the misfortune to have a leg broken whil cartin'* building iron, etc, Horn the Carterton railway. After leaving the service of Mr Moriarty he worked loi the late Mr S. C. Skelley and at the Carterton branch or Iho WT.C.A When the call to arms was made in IJI4 the late Mr H. A. Eick was among the Rrst recruits who enlisted in Carterton lot service overseas. He went into carnp and left New Zealand with the Wellington Regiment in the Main Body He was a Sergeant attached to the Records Office in Egypt, and saw service in Egypt and France, and was with the' Base Records in Rouem France. After the termination of the Great War he was stationed at the London headquarters for 12 months as a first-class Warrant Officer. In 1919 he was married in London and ’’eturnc-. to New Zealand, taking up his old position with the W.F.C.A He was afterwards transferred to the Pahiatua branch of the firm'where he was en gaged for some considerable time. After relinquishing his position with the firm he was engaged in various occupations. He was a very ardent member of Manchester Unity Oidei of Odd Fellows, having joined Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge. Carterton. m • 1909 and of which he was a membei at the ’time of his death. For the past fourteen years he has been financial secretary to the Mangatainoka Lodge of Odd Fellows, which position he held at the time of his death. He was also instrumental with other members m the formation of Loyal Tararua Past Grands’ Lodge of Odd Fellows and has since his initiation into the Order been • a very useful and valued member. In 1928 the late Bro Bick was elected a member of the Wellington District Management Committee, being a member of the Governing body for three years Deceased was born in London on October 1, 1883. He was at the time of his death secretary to the Athletic Society in Pahiatua and many successful sports gatherings were held under his jurisdiction. He was also associated with many other institutions and was a prominent member of the Church of England. He leaves a widow and two children (a son Arthur, who resides in Wellington, and a daughter. Miss Dorothy Bick, of Pahiatua) to mourn thenloss. The funeral will take place on Tues.day. leaving his late residence for the English Church where a short service Will be held at 2 o’clock. After the service at the Church the cortege will move off for the Mangatainoka cemetery. ; Salvation Army. ./The Wellington South Salvation *S\rmy Choir gave a concert in the State Theatre. Carterton. on Saturday night when there was a good attendance of the public who enjoyed a very fine programme of items, all ol which were loudly encored. Services were held at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. by Major (Padre) Hayes and the Choir to good attendances. On Sunday evening the Major delivered a very stirring address on "A Soldiers Confession." There was a large attendance of Carterton returned soldiers who par-; aded to the State Theatre and took part in the proceedings. Personal. Mr and Mrs W. S.
