BOY SCOUTS’ JAMBOREE
RELAY CYCLE RACE SOUTH ISLAND RIDERS START. 1 (By Telegraph—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL. July 14. At 3 o’clock this afternoon a Boj Scout left Invercargill on a bicycle on the first stage of a relay journey tc Nelson. The boy, Douglas Payne, Clifton. is the most southern scout in the world. At the same time a boy was to have left Auckland on a similar journey tc Wellington. ■ The event is actually a relay race between North and South Islands, tc arouse interest in the Centennial Boj Scouts' Jamboree at Heretaunga. Ten scouts left Invercargill to take the bicycle in relays to Balclutha which they reached at 8.45 p.m., a quarter of an hour before the time expected. In all 14 boys took part in the journey to Balclutha. four others joining in from other parts of Southland.
Jamboree organisers in Wellington who were responsible for the organisation of the cycle relay race, stated on Tuesday that the race had been abandoned, and preparations allowed tc lapse. The reason for this was that difficulty was experienced in completing the North Island arrangements, and it was also considered that the rigours of the route, and the . uncertainty of the weather at this season, made it inadyisable to proceed with the scheme. No statement to the contrary has since been issued. It seems probable, therefore, that the South Island scouts arc racing alone.
