CARTERTON
POULTRY SHOW A SUCCESSFUL EXHIBITION. (“Times-Age” Special.) A very successful show was brought to a conclusion at the King's Theatre last evening by the Wairarapa Poultry, Pigeon and Cage Bird Society when there was a large attendance. Those present were loud in their praise of the excellent quality of the exhibits. In the Home Industries section the judge, Mrs A. F. Pink made the following awards: — Home-made oven scones, not less than four, Mrs P. Hodder 1 and 2; nut and date loaf, Miss Ethel E. McKenzie 1, Mrs P. Hodder 2; fancy scones, Mrs P. Hodder 1 and 2; gems, Mrs P. Hodder 1 and 2; jam tarts, Mrs K. Reid 1 and 2, Mrs T. Mellish 3; shortbread, Mrs K. Reid 1, Mrs Edge 2, Mrs P. Hodder 3; sausage rolls, Mrs P. Hodder 1 and 2; pound cake, Miss Ethel E. McKenzie 1; chocolate cake, Mrs P. Hodder 1; tomato sauce, Miss J. Beamish 1 and 2, Mrs K. Reid 3; chutney, Mrs K. Reid 1; jelly, Miss Edge 1, Mrs P. Hodder 2; any article of art or craft, Miss Ethel E. McKenzie 1, 2 and 3; most points in home industries, Mrs P. Hodder. » RACING CLUB STEWARDS MEET. The monthly meeting of the Carterton Racing Club's stewards was held last evening. Mr W. Howard Booth presided and there were also present: Messrs W. C. Deller, L. H. Smart, J. C. Harp, R. G. Kemble, E. J. Matson, G. A. Vincent, H. J. Brown, V. L. Robinson. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs C. Reid, Geo. Eaton, C. Jensen, J. Johnson, A. O. Abbott and C. Bain. The treasurer reported a debit balance of £565 14s Id. Receipts since the last meeting totalled £35 19s sd. Accounts amounting to £45 were passed for payment. Correspondence was received from the New Zealand Racing Conference relative to the Social Security tax upon Racing Clubs and stating that an effort was being made to have the 1 per cent refund of totalisator duty made permanent instead of being an annual request to the Government. The 1 per cent refund was important to racing clubs if it could be a permanent one. By this means many clubs could then be in a position to pay the Social Security tax on their income. It was reported that the retiring stewards this year would be Messrs A. O. Abbott, W. C. Deller, J. C. Harp, J. Johnson, E. G. Matson and V. L. Robinson. ■ OBITUARY MRS M. A. ALLEN. The death occurred at Palmerston North last night of Mrs Mary Ann Allen, relict of the late Mr Allen who predeceased his wife many years ago. The deceased, who had reached the age of 79 years, was a well known figure Jn Palmerston North and was highly "respected by a very large circle of friends. The late Mrs Allen was the eldest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Thomas Kempton, pioneer settlers of Greytown. She leaves a family of two sons and four daughters and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Two brothers, Messrs A. J. and F. V. Kempton, of Greytown, and two sisters, Mesdames Mitchell, of Otaki, and H. T. Hawke, of Clareville, are left to mourn their loss. Messrs George and Ernest Allen are nephews. The funeral will take place at Palmerston North at 2.30 p.m. tomorrow.
Gas Works Exhauster. Mr Lever, engineer, is at present at the Carterton gasworks completing the installation of the new gas exhauster. When this work is completed the residents of Carterton can be assured that they will receive a plentiful supply of the best quality gas and that there will not be any shortage or variation in its heating or lighting power. Personal. Mrs H. W. Grigg, of Carrington, who recently sold his dairy herd and his property, left Carterton this morning to take up his residence in Napier. Euchre Party and Dance. The Carterton branch of the Farmers' Union will hold a euchre party and dance in the Parkvale Hall on Monday night. The function is being held to augment the funds of the Union and given fine weather there should be a large attendance. The music for the dance will be supplied by Mrs Ashton and Mr Gordon Udy. Supper will be provided. Miniature Rifles Meeting. Entries for the annual championship meeting of the Wairarapa Miniature Rifle Association .are coming in freely and probably a record entry will be received. The meeting will be held on the Greytown range on Saturday. July 22.
