BOXING

A SPIRITED CONTEST.

MORTON BEATS GRIFFIN.

(Bv Telegraph—Press Assocratlon.) WELLINGTON, This Day

Mayne Morton (Hutt Valley) proved too rugged for John L. Griffin (Waipukurau) in a 10-round professional contest staged by the Hutt Valley Boxing Association at Petone. last night, before a well-filled house. *

It was a spirited contest, but Morton did the leading throughout, and gradually wore his ma,n down with a twohanded attack to head and body. Griffin boxed-cleverly, but there was not much power in his punches. The end came in the ninth round, when Morton put his man down for nine with a left hook, and upon Griffin gamely resuming the perpendicular, a right cross spreadeagled him again. The referee counted nine, and then raised Morton's hand in token of victory.
