MOTORIST SENT TO GAOL
ON CHARGE OF NEGLIGENCE CAUSING DEATH.
OBSERVATIONS BY JUDGE ON SPEEDING.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
BLENHEIM, This Day
The only criminal case before the Supreme Court sessions which opened today comprised charges against Charles Gordon Gladstone Prior, tractor driver, of recklessly driving a motor-car, thereby causing the death of Eric Price Newburgh, or alternatively of negligently driving and causing death. A True Bill on the alternative charge was returned by the Grand Jury and accused pleaded guilty. Mr Justice Northcroft, despite a plea for leniency, imposed a sentence of two months’ imprisonment with hard labour and the cancellation of accused's licence for three years. In doing so. his Honour said he was satisfied that accused had been speeding. It was his duty to implement the warnings against speeding so often given by tl--Courts.
