EKETAHUNA

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mrs Carter presided at the monthly meeting of the Eketahuna Womens Institute. The programme took the form of a -mystery afternoon. The ladies of the committee were the hostesses and were in fancy dress. After singing the National Anthem, the recital of the Ode to Friendship and the Institute prayer for peace. Mrs Carter welcomed two new members. The roll call was "Nursery Rhymes” all members being able to answer with readiness. Master Brian McAlister entertained by singing “The Toymaker’s Dream’ and Constance McAlister sang “The Last Rose of Summer” and for an encore “The Long, Long Trail” in a very pleasing style. Miss P. Doherty accompanied both singers. The competitions were as follow: — The Mystery Parcel had every one well baffled except Mrs Burling who successfully guessed the contents. The Autograph competition was also won by Mrs Burling. Buttonhole 23 entries: Mrs Fraser, two entries, equal 1, Mrs Fraser and Mrs Baucke equal 2, and Mrs Wilson 3. Tea towel: 12 entries Mrs Fraser, two entries equal 1, Mrs Wilson 2 and 3. Mrs McAlister was in charge of the "Bring and Buy Stall,’ all goods finding ready sale. Ridings Amalgamation. At the monthly meeting of the Eketahuna County Council a notice of motion (a) given by Cr Bailey to abolish riding accounts and establish uniform general and special rating; and (b) notice of amendment to motion by Cr Goggin, to abolish riding accounts and establish uniform general rating, but to make no change in the special rating, were before the meeting. Cr R. Kebbell moved as an amendment to the motion: “That a vote of ratepayers be taken at the next County election over the whole County on the amalgamation of Ridings.” Cr Bailey: That means a postponement of three years. Cr H. Kebbell seconded. The voting on Cr Goggin’s amendment was 3 for and 7 against. On Cr Kebbell’s amendment, the voting was 7 for and 3 against. Appointment of Assessor. ; Mr L. T. Daniell has been appointed by the Eketahuna County Council its representative on the Assessment Court to hear objections to valuations and if he is unable to accept, Mr W. O. Twentyman. EKETAHUNA ROADS ENGINEER’S REPORT. The Engineer (Mr W. Duffil) reported as follows on work done on County roads for the period ending June 30, to the monthly Eketahuna County Council. Alfredton Riding.—Waihoki Road: The water-tables and outlets have received attention and the corner widening almost completed. Leach’s Road. —Water tables and culverts were attended to over a one mile length. Puketoi Road. —Weak places in the metalled section were built up with crushed metal. Settlement Road. — Water-tables and outlets cleaned and several outlets attended to. Saunders’ Road.—The usual surface maintenance was carried out and a washout on the new metalled section temporarily attended to. Mt Baker Road. The section up to Goves’s was graded and 30 cub yds of metal run out in the weak places. No. 63 Masterton-Webei —Some 240 cub yds of maintenance metal were run out on the section from Napier's Bridge East eastwards, and the section from Alfredton to Tiraumea graded and water-tables and outlets trimmed. Several drains were cleaned and a number of wooden box culverts replaced with pipes, and others put in where urgently necessary. No. 62 Eketahuna-Alfredton. —Maintenance metal to a total of 213 cub yds was placed on the Rongomai-Alfredton section at places requiring attention and water-tables and outlets attended to. The entire length was graded.

No. 555 Pah Valley.—Maintenance metalling was carried out on the Tane section some 200 cub yds being run or the bare sections, and in addition tc water tabling, the highway was graded throughout.

No. 442 Mangaone Valley.—A small quantity of metalling was done and the whole section graded, in addition to ordinary surface maintenance. No. 477 Eketahuna-Nireaha. —The metalled section was patched through-” out and graded. A failure under the sealing adjacent to Tyler’s bridge occurred due to a spring. This was lifted over a small area and the spring piped. The sealing at this point will be patched at a later date.
