PIG FARMING INTERESTING ADDRESS. Mr E. T. Bliss presided over a meeting of pig breeders of the Carterton and surrounding districts, held in the P. and A. board room. Owing to the weather conditions there was not a very large attendance. Mr M. J. Scott, supervisor for the Department of Agriculture, gave a very interesting address to those present on the activities of the department and pig clubs and breeders generally. Mr Scott said that the grading of pigs had resulted in a certain number of complaints owing to the number of rejects. The loss to the marketer had been considerable. Various remedies had been suggested, such as the closing of saleyards, making all sales at per pound. Another suggestion was that the compensation and insurance for condemned pigs should be cut out so that the man who marketed the unsound pig would have to stand the loss. No doubt the latter regulation would achieve the objects aimed at by the department, said the speaker, although it would for a time be hard on the farmer. By means of the carcase valuation scheme requiring the tattooing of all pigs to be made into bacon, a quick growing strain could be established irrespective of any pure breeds. A third aim of the department was the census of pigs wherein the possible profit could be established and used as a standard for the industry. Mr Scott stressed the necessity for sanitary arrangements and suitable buildings for pigs. Those surroundings were just as necessary and important as were conditions usually provided for cows and sheep. A number of questions were asked and satisfactorily answered. POULTRY SHOW Last year the initial show of the Wairarapa Poultry, Pigeon and Cage Bird Society held in the King’s Theatre, Carterton, proved a great success. The second show will be held in the same hall on Thursday and Friday next. A large number of entries have been received and include birds from all the best breeders of th North Island. As several championships will be decided the competition should be keen. Those interested in poultry, pigeons and cage birds should be delighted with the competition between 400 champions.
