STRASSBURG CATHEDRAL
SPIRE FIVE HUNDRED YEARS OLD. The steeple that rises on one of the towers above the lace work pink cathedral. of Strassburg is this year five centuries old. It was on June 24, 1439. that the great cathedral was declared completed and formally dedicated. Its spire. 446 feet high, made it the highest cathedral in the world until the middle of the nineteenth century. Celebrations io commemorate the fifth centenary were held from June 15 to 25. Throe days were devoted to the spire, with fireworks and illuminations.
Lit by hidden lights. the casing of delicate stone, projecting a foot from the actual walls, stood out like lace, and blazing fireworks threw rainbow colours on to the stone. A. performance of a medieval Passion play was given before lhe main entrance. A procession of Alsatians, wearing all the different costumes of the region marched through the old quarters of the town and passed before the cathedral.
