At Pahiatua on Saturday the death occurred of Mr Joseph Edward Murphy, brother of Mr M. F. Murphy, at the age of 62 years. Messrs P. Hereford (Wellington), E. R. Tremaine (Auckland), B. Hollier (Hastings) and J. Donald (Wellington) are among the guests at the Hotel Midland.

The Rev D. C. McKee, Pastor of the Petone Baptist Church, was a visitor to Masterton over the weekend and conducted the service at the Baptist Church on Sunday.

Captain J. Ellis, who has been in charge of Church Army Training College at' Newcastle, England, for three years, arrived in Wellington by the Awatea today on a short visit to New Zealand.

The interment of the late Miss J. Mclntyre took place at the Masterton Cemetery this morning, the Rev John Davie conducting the service. Messrs W. J. Miller, T. M. Miller, Alex Miller, S. E. Pragnell, G. Hyde and V. Steers acted as pall-bearers.

Mr Raymond Ferner, Stipendiary Magistrate and Warden for the West Coast district, has received advice of his transfer to Whangarei. He will leave in September, and will be succeeded by Mr Chisholm, S.M., Auckland.

The funeral of the late Miss S. Harrison, took place - in Masterton yesterday, there being a representative attendance of mourners. The Rev E. J. Rich officiated, and the pall-bearers were Messrs Ern Johnston (New Plymouth), Fred Groombridge, senr. (Feilding) Thomas Harrison (Oaraaru), Fred Groombridge, Junr (Feilding), Frank Bluett (Wellington) and George Groombridge (Feilding).

The funeral of the late Mrs P. McKinnon took place at Wanganui on Saturday afternoon. The services at the Trinity Methodist Church and at the graveside were conducted by the Rev. E. B. Chambers. Besides others, wreaths were sent by the staff of the W.F.C.A. Ltd., Masterton, the Trinity Women’s Missionary Auxiliary and the Trinity Ladies’ Guild. Messrs A. J. Parsons, P. Parsons Junr., T. Long and Twining were the pall-bearers. There was a representative attendance at the funeral yesterday of the late Mrs R. C. J. Weston, of Mt. Bruce Road. The Rev. E. J. Rich conducted a service at the residence and at the graveside. Wreaths were sent by the Mt. Bruce Tennis Club and the Opaki Women’s Institute, besides others. The pall-bearers were Messrs Roy Carter, Peter McPherson. Frank Dillon, Victor Dillon, John Wingate and Ivan Weston.

The death occurred in Pretoria, South Africa, recently, of Mr Walter Connor, formerly a resident of Palmerston North, at the age of 55 years. Mr Connor was born in Wellington, and, after leaving school, joined a carrying business owned by his father. However, at the age of 19 he went goldmining on the West Coast, and thence proceeded to Waihi. For some time after that he was engaged in farming at Huntly, and later went to Palmers ton North, where he entered into business. Except for a short period in Wellington. he had stayed in Palmerston North continuously. On his retirement last year he went to South Africa with Mrs Connor.

The death occurred in Eltham recently of Mr Henry Gardiner, who was born at Nelson 82 years ago, coming to the North Island as a young man to become one of the pioneer settlers of Mangatoki. taking up a bush section on Upper Duthie Road nearly 50 years ago. He opened the first blacksmiths shop at Mangatoki. where he followed his occupation as a blacksmith as well as carrying on the farm. Mr Gardiner was also an early director of the Mangatoki' Dairy Company, and at one time a trustee of the Mangatoki Church. About 32 years ago he sold his farm and settled on a small property at Chiselhurst. Eltham. where he resided till his death.

The death occurred in Palmerston North last week of Mr Frederick George Moore, aged 73 years, an old resident, of Pahiatua. Mr Moore was born in Chepstow, Monmouthshire, and spent his early days in Waipawa. In 1888, he removed to Pahiatua. where he carried on business as a bookseller, stationer and printer till his retirement in 1933. when he took up his residence in Palmerston North. He married, in 1886. Miss Sarah Maiscy. Woodville. Mr Moore took a keen interest in the Ancient Order of Foresters in Pahiatua. and served with distinction in the principal offices of his lodge. He was also one of the first members initiated in Tararua Masonic lodge. He leaves a widow and two sons.
