The borrowing of £125,500 by the Auckland Metropolitan Fire Board for the erection of its proposed new central station at the junction of Pitt Street and Grey’s Avenue has been sanctioned by Order-in-Council published in the latest Gazette. The loan is to have a term of 25 years and interest has been fixed at 4,| per cent. The board received authority in 1937 to borrow £30,000 for the purchase of the site and was also authorised to raise the money by hypothecation of debentures. The loan authority imposed a time-limit of two years within which money might be borrowed. This period has now been extended to three years. Meals for Children. An effort to meet the need of providing country school children, who sometimes come to school from long distances, with hot meals in the winter. has been made by the teacher at the AsHbutrton Forks School. The children are supplied with hot cocoa at 10 o’clock every day, and at 12.45 the gong sounds for a hot luncheon. The girls of the school take turns at preparing the meals. An electric stove has been installed and the pupils are very enthusiastic about the scheme. The butcher and the baker call regularly, and the menus are varied to a considerable extent. Figures showing the average consumption of each pupil indicate a distinct development in appetite since the scheme began. Financially, the scheme is a very satisfactory one for the parents, the charge on them for each meal being trifling. The parents have undertaken to supply the milk and vegetables, while gifts of such commodities as honey and jam help the scheme along.
