FREE WINE
CONCESSION FOR SINGLE DAY. Wino is free in Wangen, a picturesque village surrounded by medieval ramparts and vineguards, in Ajsace. but only for one day a year. . The free wino on the auspicious annual occasion flows from the village fountain, which every other clay pours cut its stream of fresh water.
Free wine day in Wangen is July 3. An inscription on the obelisk above the fountain explains that the custom dates back to 1830. when the village was victorious in a law suit that had dragged along for many years. At every anniversary. the mayor reads out to the assembled villagers the finding of the court, choirs of children sing old Alsatian songs, there is much hand-clapping, and for the rest of the day the fountain provides wine to be drunk in celebration of the fam ous legal victory.
