“HOME SWEET HOME”
WRITER OF SONG HOMELESS. John Howard Payne, writer of ‘ Home Sweet Home," never had a real home and died in a foreign land. Born in New York on June 9, 1792, he made his debut as an actor there in 1809, and in 1813 appeared in London. For thirty years he had a successful career as an actor and author of plays, chiefly adaptations. The best known were Brutus." "Charles II,” and “Clari,” the last-named including the celebrated song for which Payne's memory is cherished. Its music is supposed to have been adapted from a Sicilian air by Sir Henry Bishop. Payne was appointed American Con-1 sul at Tunis in 1841, and died there in 1352. He died a long way from home, but his admirers saw to it that his remains were not left in a foreign land. His body was taken to America and buried at Washington in 1883. "Home Sweet Homo" is probably the world’s best known song. Its expressive words and simple music are familiar to all. Great operatic stars have sung it and brought tears to the eyes of their audiences.
