"President Roosevelt has directed Admiral Richard Byrd to proceed to the Antarctic early in October. to substantiate claims to American territory within the sphere of influence of the Monroe Doctrine. Admiral Byrd said he hoped to depart before October 15. He added that the men at the bases would remain for a year, when they would probably be replaced. The bases would be equipped by means of aeroplanes. Ho is using three ships, his own Bear of Oakland, the specially designed coastguard cutter Northland and the ice ship Norin Star, which is at present being used to carry supplies to the Alaskan Indians.
