SUBSTANTIAL SURPLUS SHOWN. INCREASED EXPENDITURE ON DEFENCE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day. 10.45 a.m.) CANBERRA. This Day. The Commonwealth finances for the year ended June 30 showed a surplus of receipts over expenditure of £627,000. The revenue amounted to £93,256, - 000 and expenditure to £92,629,000. Defence expenditure is a million in excess of the Budget estimate, but there wore savings in other departments.
