SMASH & GRAB
MUST END IN EUROPE OR WAR WILL BECOME INEVITABLE AT NEXT ACT OF AGGRESSION. MR ANTHONY EDEN'S SURVEY. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY. July 7. We ca ii ex peel no change for the heller.” said Mr Anthony Edon, speaking in Strut I'ord-on-A von, “till all the Governments are finally convinced any further act of aggression must inevitably involve all Europe in conllicl. Thai is the crux of lhe mat1 er. “The ultimate issue before Europe can be simply put. Either ail those who enjoy the responsibility of power will understand that the days of smash arid grab in Europe are over and will join to negotiate and establish some system ot international order, or Europe will be plunged into war at the next act of aggression.”
Mr Eden said that all sections of the British people loved peace, but they had made up their own minds on this —they were prepared to co-operate and negotiate when the menace of armed force had been removed, but they were equally determined that there should be neither hesitation before threats nor concession to force. “The nation is fully alive to the nature of the challenge that confronts us. We are living through a ‘war of nerves’ —-a description which is apt — but neither these tactics nor any other that can be contrived will intimidate I the British people. “To imagine that we can be worn down by a succession of alarms and excursions or brow-beaten by repeated threats is to cherish a most dangerous illusion."
