(lenera I Chiang Kai-shek, in his war anniversary stale- • merit, said : ‘‘The enemy has dug his own grave and it only remains for us to push him in. -Japan is malting a last effort and we may now inflict the severest and final blow. The war probably will be decided this year.” JAPANESE CLAIMS DESTRUCTION OF CHINESE PLANES. (Received This'Day, 9.10 a.m.) TOKIO. July 7. Army headquarters announce that the Japanese have brought down 672 Chinese aeroplanes during the war and destroyed 196 on the ground, and that over 7000 tons of bombs were dropped on military establishments and troops. It is also claimed that 393 Russian planes have been shot down in Manchukuo since May.
FIFTY CASUALTIES JAPANESE BOMBING RAID. ON CHUNGKING. THREE EXTENSIVE FIRES. CHUNGKING, July 6. The population sweltered in dugouts for two hours while four waves of Japanese planes dropped 80 bombs, causing 50 casualties. There were three extensive fires. BRITISH GUNBOAT DAMAGED. (Received This Day, 10.45 a.m.) CHUNGKING, July 7. The British gunboat Falcon has reported that she has been slightly damaged by bombs.
