OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP WON BY J. BURTON AFTER VERY STEADY PLAY. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, 9.20 a.m.) LONDON, July 7. The British open golf championship was won by J. Burton, with an aggregate of 290, the rounds being 70, '72, 77 and 71. Other leading scores were: J. Bulla, 77/71/71/73—292; J. Fallon 71,. 73, 71, 79 —294; A. Perry, 71, 74, 73, 76—294; C. Shankland, 72, 73. 72, 77—294: R. A. Whitcombe, 71, 75, 74, 74—294; S.. King, 74. 72, 75, 73—294; M. Posse, 71, 72, J 76, 76—295; A. D. Locke, 70, 75, 76,' ,75, 296; P. AlliSS; 75, 73, 74, 74—296; i Kenyon, 76, 74, 74; 74—296; H. Colton, 174, 72, 76, 76—298; j. Bruen, 72, 77, 73, 76—298. A crowd of ten thousand stariipbded the course when Burton was pi-e--sented with the trophy. Burton declared: “This is one of my life’s ambitions. I thank the competitors for allowing me to win.” The weather was bad, there being a strong wind with heavy rain. In the morning Burton went out in 35. In the final round he knew he needed a 37 on the homeward journey to beat Bulla and played very steadily. Burton got a three at the last hole. John Burton is 36 years of age. He first came into prominehbe when he won the Man'chestei' arid district professional championship lit 1930, arid was runner-tip for the northern Championship in the same year. He won the Pe.nfold-Porthcawl tburnarrient in 1933, and played for England against Ireland in the same year.
