DEBATE OPENED IN HOUSE OP REPRESENTATIVES. WIDE RANGE OF TOPICS DISCUSSED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. The Address-in-Reply debate was opened in the 'House of Representatives last night with maiden speeches by Mr R. M. Macfarlane (Government, Christchurch South) and Mr C. W. Boswell (Government, Bay of Islands). In accordance with custom they wore evening dress, ana each speaker was applauded both at the start and finish of his address. Mr Macfarlane, who spoke for 48 minutes, discussed a wide range of topics. He said that higher wages more than compensated for any increase in the cost of living. Mr Boswell’s speech lasted an hour and a half. Rural questions were referred to chiefly by him and he advocated greater development of the resources in the North Auckland district. The House adjourned at 9.52 p.m. till tonight, when the debate will be resumed by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Hamilton, who is expected to move a no-confidence amendment. He will be followed by the Prime Minister. Mr Savage. Formal business only was transacted yesterday afternoon, and after a 10-minute sitting the House adjourned till the evening.
