STEEPLES WON BY SURVOY. WHYTE HANDICAP TO JACK TAR. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The feature of the opening of the Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting at Trentham yesterday, was the success of the Auckland jumping form. It swept the board in all four races confined to this class of horse. Bridegroom led off by repeating his Auckland success in the hack steeplechase, Jewelled Girdle won the hack hurdle race, Survoy and Power Chief restaged their placings in the Great Northern by similar efforts in the Wellington Steeplechase, though Survoy this time won much more easily, and King Rey, Loombination and Inness Lad took all the prizes in the Trentham hurdle race. In addition to this, Jack Tar won the principal handicap on the flat, the Whyte. There was a large attendance and the totalisator returns are still going up. The total for the day was £57,341 (win £25,137 10s, place £32,203 10s), compared with £51,664 10s on the first day last year, an increase of £5,676 10s.
