OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS
LEADERSHIP & DEFENCE •. (To the Editor.) Sir—While watching with interest reports in the “Times-Age" of the rapid increase in the rate of recruiting Territorials locally. I have been waiting to see some sign of life in this direction come from the leaders of the community. In other centres mayors and leading citizens have come out in the open to assist the recruiting campaign and encourage young fellows to join the Territorial army and older men to join the National Reserve. In Masterton it would seem that the Defence authorities are left to fight a lone battle. Fortunately they have been wonderfully successful and our community can take pride in the fact that many young fellows appreciate so fully their obligation to their country. Even so there still remains the National Reserve and the opportunity for a concerted community eflort led by some of our civic dignitaries. Is it too much to hope for such a campaign. or will this district struggle on leaderless at a time when a united stand throughout democratic countries might still more frighten the blustering European dictators? —Your, etc., RESERVIST. Masterton. July 4.
