RUGBY FOOTBALL

WAIRARAPA COMPETITIONS Old Boys Trounce Red Star CARTERTON HELD TO DRAW BY GLADSTONE MASTERTON SCORE OVER GREYTOWN ON CALL OF TIME Playing fast and brilliant Rugby on Saturday Old Boys scored a convincing win over Red Star. Carterton again failed to produce the form that stamped them a champion team in the early part of the competition and they were nard pressed to hold Gladstone to a draw. In a game that was f.ili of incident from start to finish Masterton scored their second win this season by defeating Greytown, just on the call of time. Selector Keith Reid was in attendance at Memorial Park and was no doubt impressed with the display of O. Hatton, the Old Boys’ second five-eighths. Hatton should at least solve the second five-eighths problem for the game with Bush on July 8.

RESULTS AT A GLANCE. Senior. Old Boys 38, Red Star 3. Carterton 6, Gladstone 6. Masterton 20, Greytown 17. Junior. Red Star 7, Masterton 0. Old Boys 20, Carterton 12. Opaki 14, Martinborough 8. Featherston 11, Greytown 10. Third Grade. Red Star 26, Featherston 4. Fourth Grade. Masterton 25, Martinborough 0. SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP OLD BOYS v RED STAR. EASY VICTORY FOR OLD BOYS. Inspired by the inclusion in the five-eighths line of O. Hatton, Old Boys played their best game this year, when they defeated Red Star at Memorial Park by 38 points to 3. Old Boys were on top right from the word “go” to “nq-side” and did not let up once during the entire game. With the exception of the line-outs and occasional flashes in the scrums Star forwards were completely overwhelmed. Thanks to the work of Russ Howard and N. Harding, Star broke evens in the line-outs, and at times they would win the scrums in quick succession and then fade away again. Lack of condition seemed to be the main trouble. For the first time this season the Old Boys rearguard ran straight and O. Hatton was the player responsible for it. Fast off the mark, and quick to gather speed, Hatton put back the punch that has been lacking in the Old Boys backs. Hatton’s tackling was all that is to be desired, and his stab kicks often found gaps in the Star defence. Denbee again played well behind the Old Boys’ scrum. Russ Howard was the outstanding forward on the field. He was at the head of every Star rush and had support been offering at least two tries would have resulted. N. Harding also toiled well, especially in the line-outs, and W. Osborne played hard all day. All the Old Boys’ forwards played sound Rugby, but Dyer and J. Corbishley impressed most. R. Bi’oom played an outstanding game at full-back for Star. He kicked strongly, and tackled like a demon. O’Callaghan also played well and his place-kicking was his best this year. Old Boys opened their account when the Stars were penalised and O’Callaghan landed a goal. Then Rayner, coming up fast, crossed well out. O’Callaghan converted. Crashing through Bedingfield’s tackle Clarke raised Stars’ hopes but O’Callaghan made no mistake with the tackle. A well-directed kick by Hatton saw Corbishley gather in, pass to Meurk, who in turn swung back to Hatton, the latter scoring in a handy position. O’Callaghan goaled. Again Hatton was away, but Meurk was downed ball and all by Broom, who was playing a brilliant game. Hatton came yet again, cutting the Star defence to i ribbons, but Bodie, with Parsonson on the outside, tried to go through Broom, and was promptly dumped. A few minutes later Hatton dropped a goal from about 30 yards out. The Stars now came to life and R. Howard, breaking fast from a line-out, just missed a try, O'Callaghan grassing him inches away. Star continued to press. Half-time came with Old Boys 17 points in the lead. On resuming Old Boys immediately attacked. Mitchell, with the ball at toe, went right to the Star line to score. The kick failed. From a melee Dyer forced his way over. The kick failed. Star came with a rush and after all the backs had mishandled, Peterson snapped up brilliantly, brushed off a couple of would-be tacklers and scored in the corner. The kick was unsuccessful. N. Harding was hurt and E. Dwyer replaced him. Meurk 1 crossed under the posts. O’Callaghan goaled. Parsonson intercepting a pass went right to Broom before sending on to Meurk who scored. O’Callaghan goaled. Then Dyer scored. O’Callaghan converted, making the final score Old Boys 38, Red Star 3. The referee was Mr H. J. McKenzie. MASTERTON v. GREYTOWN LAST MINUTE WIN. The Masterton-Greytown match on Memorial Park No. 2 was characteristic of weak defensive play on the part of the Greytown rearguard. With only a few minutes to go Greytown lead 17-15. When M. Hargood cut through smartly and with a short punt over the full back’s head sent his forwards streaking over the goal-line for Gray to touch down. Ewington made no mistake with the kick leaving Masterton the winners 20-17. Masterton gained the majority of the scrums, while the line-outs were more evenly divided. Greytown’s main fault was that the forwards did not go as a pack, and had, they done this the result might have been different. M. Hargood, the Masterton second five-eighth, played splendidly throughout. Hargood’s attacking play was brilliant, while his defensive play was an example to the best of players. His cut through, which was responsible for the Black’s final try was a gem. V. Gray who was moved in to centre shortly after the commencement of the game also played well, both on. attack and defence. J. Dickason was always safe though not brilliant. Max Braggins,

the Black's half came through with flying colours. Of the visiting backs they were all much of a muchness. Rex Brunton was certainly outclassed by his vis-a-vis M. Hargood. The fast breaking Masterton pack played havoc with the visiting backs. Greytown, unfortunately were without the services of the promising young fiveeighth Sugrue, which undoubtedly upset their rearguard. Of the forwards Wilson was easily the pick of the bunch, he toiled well in the tight and was out on his own in the loose. E. Hargood again did more than his share. Harry Ewington was right on form, his goal-kicking being accurate and his try was the result of good following up. Stringfellow once, again was the pick of, the Greytown forwards doing his best to lead his team to victory. Mr B. Hurley was the referee. Tries for Masterton were scored by Hargood (2), Braggins and Gray. Ewington kicked two penalties and converted a try. CARTERTON v GLADSTONE. A DRAWN GAME. In a keenly fought game at Gladstone each side scored six points. The game produced excellent football at times. Both sets of forwards played at top speed and indulged in many high class rushes, solid defence only preventing scores. Some of the movements among the backs were of a thrilling nature, and equal to anything seen this season in the Wairarapa. Clean cut attacking movements were quite numerous. The Carterton pack indulged in many slashing rushes, gaining considerable stretches of ground by their clever work. The Gladstone forwards fought back in great style and the result was a keen and exciting struggle for supremacy. There were plenty of movements to keep the spectators on the tip-toe of expectation and interest and the game never flagged. In the first spell Frank Fitzgerald kicked a penalty goal for Carterton and Foreman did likewise for Gladstone. In the second spell Taucher scored a try for Carterton. and just on time J. Walker kicked a penalty goal for Gladstone from nearly half-way. POSITION OF TEAMS.

COLLEGE GAME WAIRARAPA BEAT-NAPIER. The Napier Boys’ High School first fifteen were narrowly defeated by 11 points to 10 in the annual inter-school Rugby football fixture against Wairarapa College played at the Napier school grounds on Friday afternoon. The game was a willing one from start to finish, and both teams displayed that splendid sporting spirit which makes school matches so enjoyable for spectators. The Wairarapa team played game and clever football. Only one incident marred the contest when Cummins, the Napier wing three-quarter was forced to leave the field suffering from slight concussion. He was later taken to the Napier Public Hospital for treatment. The following were the teams fielded: —Wairarapa College: R. Daniell (captain), N. Wilson (vice-captain), B. Beiliss. A. Stevenson, L. Napier scored under the posts for a converted try, Wairarapa College 11. Napier 10. Neither team were able to improve their score before the final whistle. Wairarapa's first and last tries were scored as the result cf brilliant back movements, in which the ball passed through all hands. Napier’s first try also followed a great back movement.
