WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT GLADSTONE. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Gladstone Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting in the Gladstone Hall, Mrs N. McKay presiding over a good attendance of members. Mrs Alexander addressed the meeting concerning the proposed Paddy’s Market to raise funds for the entertainment of visiting Australian Diggers and appealed for the co-opera-tion of members. 11 Mrs Panapa placed before members the needs of the Maoris for funds for their new meeting house. A detailed report of the Federation meeting held in Masterton in April was given by Mrs Mills. The Golden Thread subject for the day was “U.S.A.” and the roll call produced some interesting facts about that country. Mrs Wellwood, giving a short talk on the same subject, dealt mainly with the U.S.A, and the Pacific, and the influence of Mrs Roosevelt. A novel demonstration of silk weaving was given by Miss A. Bubb, and Mrs Tressider, a Hawke’s Bay Institute member, entertained with two songs. A competition for a wholemeal sponge was won by Mrs P. Cooper with Miss N. Wyeth second. Another competition for a novel winter decoration produced some very artistic designs and was won by Miss C. Cooper, Mrs W. Bubb being second.
