JACK DEMPSEY

Jack Dempsey is suffering from peritonitis, following upon removal of a gangrenous appendix in hospital. He spent a fair night and is resting comfortably. His wife is staying at the hospital, so that she may be near him. A later message stated that the hospital superintendent announced that "Dempsey is a very sick man." Telephone inquiries concerning Dempsey’s condition are so numerous that extra operators have been employed at the hospital switchboard. Some calls are coming in from places as far distant as California. The doctors said another bulletin would be issued at 4.30 p.m. (E.D.T.) Jack Dempsey was heavyweight boxing champion of the world from 1919. till 1926, when he was beaten by Gene Tunney in a decision bout of ten rounds at Philadelphia. Dempsey won the title from Jess Willard at Toledo oh July 4, 1919, the latter being knocked out.
