A series of warning speeches by statesmen, combined with rumours of an early Danzig coup and a generally tenser atmosphere, further depressed the stock markets. The turnover has long been so small that a number of Stock Exchange firms are discussing amalgamation. Gilt-edged stocks reacted on the failure of the London County Council loan. The Australian loan is now at a discount of over £3. German bonds were sharply marked down. Chinese bonds also are easier though Japanese arc more resistant. Sugar alone moved up in the stagnant commodity markets.
