There had been a drizzle in the early morning but the courts had df-ied out making play possible. Hopman ordered a physician to' examine Quist at lunch time after which it was announced that he would probably play. Quist (Australia) defeated Tapia 6/1, 6/4, 6/2. Quist’s condition was plainly reflected in his playing. Tapia won the first game, love, but Quist’s superior ability was quickly in evidence. The second set found Quist tired, but he rallied toward the end of the set and after that appeared determined to finish the match as quickly as possible, continuously storming the net.
