Whitebait will be sold in cartons this year by wholesale and retail dealers, according to an announcement made by the manager of a large Auckland firm. It is thought that this arrangement will be more hygienic, as well as ensuring uniformity of weight and making for the greater convenience of housewives. It is proposed to have two or three cartons of different weights. While it was still rather early to forecast whether the season, which opens in July, would be a good one, there was a prospect that it would be quite up to standard if a period of fine weather followed the rain. The Waikato River at present was rising slightly, and this flood water would have to clear before any fishing could be undertaken. Good shoals of whitebait have already been observed in the river, with further shoals of the breeding whitebait, the poneke, travelling towards the mouth.
