RUGBY IN WAIRARAPA

THE SENIOR COMPETITION • i INTERESTING STAGE THREE TEAMS IN GOOD POSITION. CAN GLADSTONE BEAT CARTERTON? (By “Scrum-Half.”) With Carterton only one championship point in the lead from Gladstone, and Old Boys only two points behind Gladstone, the Wairarapa senior competition has reached an interesting stage. Tomorrow Gladstone will play Carterton at Gladstone, and much will depend on the result of this match who will head the ladder when the end of the second round is reached. Should Gladstone win all three leading teams will bo within striking distance of each other, and with O. Hatton and Jim Eastwood in their side Old Boys might be very handy when, the final numbers go up. R. Wilson, Masterton’s front ranker, played a slashing game against Old Boys and was by far the outstanding forward on the field. It is unfortunate that he has not a little more weight as no doubt selector Reid will be on the look out for a front row man against Bush. Parsonson, although only on for a short period, turned on a first-class game for Old Boys. It is understood that he has recovered from his illness and will now be a regular member of the team. Parsonson is just the type of five-eighths Wairarapa is looking for. O’ Callaghan played his best game to date against Masterton, and it was not at full-back. He moved up to the five-eighths line in the second spell, putting in several good runs. F. Bodie gave a sound display at centre on Saturday. Bodie is a player who can fill almost any position in a team, but lie goes better in the pack. M. Hargood played sound Rugby against Old Boys. Although not brilliant on attack he functioned very well on defence, saving his team on numerous occasions. V. Gray showed plenty of dash and determination on Saturday. His tackling has shown a vast improvement in the last few games. R. Munro toiled solidly all day against Old Boys. The Masterton forward is perhaps bne of the best club players in the competition. Broom, a promoted junior, played at full-back for Red Star against Carterton and turned on a really good exhibition. His tackling was outstanding. W. Peterson again played well for Red Star and should not have any trouble in retaining his representative status. His try was a really fine effort. , -rtr • Brown, the Carterton and Wairarapa centre, was given no liberties by Carrig, of Red Star, and did nothing all day. Brown might find himself on the sideline against Bush. Reading, Carterton’s wing, gave an impressive display on Saturday. He ran hard, handled well and tackled soundly. . , M. Trass showed better form against Red Star that he has done for a few

weeks. Another Carterton forward who is showing up'*is Walker, who goes hard all the way. Stringfellow scored a fine try lor Greytown against Gladstone. He is a good loose forward but it might be better for his team if he put more weight in the scrum. Eric Henderson continues to play good football for Gladstone, while Johnny Walker is always a trier.
