CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Oamaru Fields Adversely Affected PROXIMITY OF TRENTHAM MEETING FORM OF RUNNERS REVIEWED
(By
“CARBINE.”)
Owing to the proximity of the Trentham meeting the fields for the Oamaru Jockey Club’s meeting have been adversely affected. The programme provides for five galloping events and two trotting races. The win and place system of betting will operate and proceedings will open at noon.
12.30— HACK AND HUNTERS’ STEEPLECHASE. Two miles. Mount Vai .. 10 0 Culverden ..9 0 Redolent .... 9 11 Red Terror .. 9 0 Drink Up .... 9 0 Bit o’ Blue ..9 0 Mount Vai, who will carry top weight in this event, is a form horse and will probably start a favourite. Redolent is another who will be liked. At Ashburton this horse was allegedly interfered with and fell. Culverden had a bad fall in the same race and his jockey was later suspended for three months for careless riding. Drink Up is a horse who can be expected to go well for most of the journey and might not be far back at the finish. Those runners finding public support may include Mount Vai Redolent ; Culverden 1.5— OAMARU TROT HANDICAP. 3.43 class. One mile and a half. Allen Wrack .. scr Undaunted .. .. scr Battle Flag .. .. scr Wandle Ben Wyvis .. .. scr Chimes scr Correctscr Lady Milne .. 12 Great Harold .. scr Royal Kansas City .. scr v Surprise 24 Lorene Vai .. .. scr Grattanita .. .. 36 Marie's Pride .. scr Tiny Straight scr Axworthy 36 Tokalon scr MacGregor .. 48 Top Handscr Although beaten at Ashburton Lady Milne is again expected to capture public fancy. Top Hand is a runner who might surprise while Maire’s Pride should also find supporters. Kansas City, a local candidate, is expected to make the going hot. In an open race public opinion may favour Lady Milne Kansas pity Maire’s Pride 1.40— BURNSIDE HACK HANDICAP. Six furlongs. Combat 9 4 Lawford Lass 8 0 Astaire 9 0 Foxy 8 0 Flame Queen 8 4 Prince Miss Tasta .... 8 4 Ruenalf 8 0 "Withdrawal ..8 1 Rosaleen Dhu 8 0 *Lockit 8 0 Jericho Jane 8 0 Brilliant Boa 8 0 Combat carried 9.3 into third place at Dunedin in the St Clair Handicap, a distance of six furlongs. He made up ground in the straight and finished nicely. On the second day he was going well at the home turn but died in the straight. Astaire has not run into a place lately, nor has Flame Queen, but the latter can be depended on to make a race of it. Lockit is a form horse and should go well. Miss Tasta is a fast horse and six furlongs might just suit her. The distance should favour Prince Ruenalf, who won nicely at Dunedin carrying four pounds more. The rest do not impress and supported horses may include Combat
Lockit Prince Ruenalf 2.20— WINTER HANDICAP. Seven furlongs. Silver Streak 9 12 Lady Leigh ..8 9 Cerne Abbas 9 2 Disband .... 8 0 Top Row 9 1 Fidelis 8 0 Petersham .... 8 9 Silver Sir Hugh .... 8 3 Slipper 8 0 Silver Streak finished on well in the Members’ Handicap at Dunedin to fill third position. On the second day he • was prominent early in the Tainui Handicap but faded in the run home. However, he is sure to command support. Cerne Abbas will of course be a strong fancy. Top Row was never sighted in the Winter Handicap at Dunedin on June 3, but might make the going hard. Petersham is a form runner and must be considered. Sir Hugh can also be depended on to run well while Lady Leigh must go well. Disband, if on, will be there, but support may be forthcoming for Silver Streak Lady Leigh Petersham 2.55 GRANGE HANDICAP. One mile and a quarter. Thermidor .... 9 4 Pink Robe ..7 8 Silver Streak 9 2 Lady Valantua .. .. 8 2 Graceful 7 7 Settlement .... 8 0 Balmenter ..7 7 Top weight Thermidor won at the recent Dunedin meeting in the Provincial Handicap and also ran a good race in the King George Handicap on the last day at that meeting, coming fast over the last furlong. Valantua scored in the Tainui Handicap at the same meeting and should again receive support. Settlement might be a horse worth following up, while Pink Robe should have every chance. Lady Grateful was a moderate third over 51 furlongs at Greymouth, but the extra distance might suit her better. Support may come for A. Thermidor Valantua Pink P.obe 3.30— WAIKAURA TROT HANDICAP. 3.1 class. One mile and a quarter. Axspear scr MacGregor .. .. scr Black Art scr Marfax scr Blaydon scr Misty Island .. scr Equerry scr Royal Erin’s Lad .. .. scr Surprise scr Glenholme .. .. scr Tiny Grattanita .. .. scr Axworthy scr Great Harold .. scr Charles Great Joy .. .. scr Russell 12 Huguenotscr Green Tanger 12 Jerry Parrish .. scr Easter Rush .. 36 Lady Milne .. .. scr Devotion 60 Lord Zetland .. scr Master Pott?> .. 60 After his Ashburton performance Blaydon will be certain to gain support and this race does not look beyond him. Erin’s Lad has run several good
races on this track and might be fancied. The Axspear—Huguenot bracket will be liked, so will Grattanita who scored recently at Greymouth. Jeiry Parrish is another worthy of note, and Labour Day might command a goodly portion of the following. Tiny Axworthy finished fifth over a mile and a half at Ashburton and will be popular. Supported horses may include Blaydon Grattanita Exspear—Huguenot 45 FAREWELL HACK HANDICAP. Seven furlongs. Astaire 9 0 Countervane 8 0 The Wrecker 9 0 Royal Style ..8 0 Green Boa .. .. 8 12 Prince Flame Queen 8 4 Ruenalf 8 0 Doctor Duthie B'3 Chief Lama ..8 0 Drink Up .... 8 1 The Wrecker is a horse who can be expected to make the going fast in this event. Green Boa Is sure to carry support and should not be very far away at the finish. Flame Queen might turn on the goods, while Royal Style is a recent winner who will probably be well fancied. The others do not impress, although if Prince Ruenalf does not start in the P trnside Hack Handicap he" will be a candidate for a place. Those finding favour may include . The Wrecker Green Boa Flame Queen RACING FIXTURES July I—Oamaru. July I—Dannevirke Hunt. July 4,6, B—Wellington. July 15—Waimate District Hunt. July 15—Hawke’s Bay Hunt. July 22—Rangitikei Hunt.
